National Hockey League Names Fox 40 Official On-Ice Whistle Supplier
For Immediate Release
NEW YORK, NEW YORK (June 29, 2000) — The National Hockey League announced today that Fox 40 International, Inc. has been named the official on-ice whistle supplier for NHL® referees and linesmen. This is the first time in NHL history that a manufacturing company has been granted a license to produce NHL-branded whistles and to distribute those whistles to retailers throughout North America.
The new Fox 40 Force Fingergrip Whistle is unique from those that were formerly used in NHL games. With input from and testing by the NHL officiating staff, Fox 40 redesigned the traditional cork "pea" sound mechanism to perform better under adverse conditions and to be moisture resistant and anti-corosive.
"In the past, the sound mechanism in traditional whistles would lose its efficiency if dirt or water were trapped inside and when it was exposed to freezing conditions," said Steve Foxcroft, Executive Vice President, Fox 40 International, Inc. "The officials' feedback has allowed us to manufacture a revolutionary new design in whistles."
Said NHL Director of Officiating Bryan Lewis, "In typical Fox 40 manner, the designers have improvised and improved this new whistle to meet the rigorous standards demanded by NHL officials."
The Fox 40 whistle will be imprinted on both sides with the NHL shield and commemorative whistles will feature the annual NHL All-Star Weekend and Stanley Cup® Finals logos.
Fox 40 International, Inc., founded in 1988 by Ron Foxcroft, a former professional basketball official, is based in Hamilton, Ontario with offices in Niagara Falls, New York. Fox 40 whistles are sold in more than 100 countries and are used by officials in all major league sports worldwide.
